I've put together a technique that we use on every job. It's a method for installing siding on a structure that ensures a perfectly aligned siding job, regardless of the level of the existing sheathing on the structure.

The system is based on using a wide 5-inch starter strip and a water level. The water level is simply a transparent hose, or tubing. Water seeks its own level, so when you fill the hose with water and hold either end of the hose next to one another, the water will settle and the level of the water will be exactly at the same elevation.
